As usual, the closer we get to Christmas, the more hectic life gets! It has been a couple of weeks since I have been able to get outside to take photos. Today I finally got a chance to explore, so I planned on leaving early to travel to Fulton, Illinois to check out the backwaters of the Mississippi River. I travelled less than a mile when I crossed the Hennepin Canal and noticed this American White Pelican standing in the shallow water.

As I was headed back to my car I noticed the beautiful gears on the old lock and snapped this photo. I love how the colors of the gears really stand out!

It felt so good to be out on this 50 degree December day. However, there wasn’t a whole lot to see. Because it has been cold the last several days, there was a thin layer of ice along the banks. So, most of the waterfowl were too far out to photograph. I decided to drive around a wooded area to see if I could spot any interesting birds. I was not disappointed! I heard it before I saw it…….this beautiful pileated woodpecker! This was the same spot that I saw the pileated woodpecker back in November.
