The day started with bright sunshine and fairly warm temperatures (low 30s). However, the skies quickly clouded up. The day remained damp and gloomy and was not a very good day for hiking or taking photos. I did go in my backyard and got these two pictures.
I had an appointment in the Quad Cities this morning, so I thought I would stop by Lock and Dam #14 in LaClaire to see if the eagles were engaged. It was another beautiful 40 degree day, so even if I didn’t get any pictures of eagles, it would be nice to be outside. There was no ice on the river, so the eagles were not very active. I did get one shot that I liked. On my way home I stopped in Port Byron, Illinois and took some pictures of some geese that were resting on the ice. I also saw a couple of crows along the road.
These are the birds that I saw at Starved Rock State Park.
Today I went for a hike with my friend Bill. We went to Starved Rock State Park in Utica, IL. It was a sunny day and the temperature was about 40 degrees. We hiked the entire day and saw lots of beautiful sites. The park was holding their bald eagle days, which we did not know about, so there were lots of people around. We didn’t see a lot of wildlife (only a few birds), but the scenery was spectacular!
I was really surprised today when I saw this robin in my neighbor’s tree. There was snow on the ground, but the temperature was around 40 degrees. This is the earliest I have ever seen a robin.
Hennepin Canal Lock and Dam 26
I am lucky to live very close to the Hennepin Canal in north central Illinois. It is a quiet place to hike throughout the year. I spend a lot of time roaming the trails in the spring and summer. Just recently I got a little better outfitted for winter outings. So this afternoon I put on my boots, coat, mittens, and hat to see if I could find something to photograph. I saw only one bird (although I heard a few more), so I took the opportunity to capture the beauty of Lock 26.
On Thursday, January 15 it was a beautiful day in Illinois. The sun was out and the temperature was right around freezing. It was a wonderful day to be out, so after work I traveled to Lock and Dam #14 near LaClaire, Iowa to see if I could find some eagles to photograph. My friend Bill warned me that the light would be tough to work with at that time of day, and he was right! I struggled to get any decent photos, and the eagles certainly didn’t cooperate. So, my favorite photo from the outing was a young ring-billed gull. I love the coloring!
